Product Review: N.Y.C. Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny

I think it is safe to say that I LOVE bronzers! I have been really into them lately, and I definitely plan on adding more to my small collection. I think bronzers do wonders when it comes to warming up your complexion, and not to mention the gorgeous glow it can give-not just for the warm summer months, but all year round.

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny ($2.99) is probably-from what I have seen, one of the most popular drugstore bronzers. It seems that everybody raves about Sunny, and I just had to see, and try this bronzer out for myself.

N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder-Sunny

Cosmetic Sponge Applicator Included

Sunny is a lovely matte, warm golden bronzer that is oil free, dermatologist tested, doesn't clog pores, and it's non comedogenic. The pigmentation is quite nice for my liking. Although, I am not sure if this bronzer would show up much on medium to deeper skinned beauties. I believe it would show up more on those who have fair to light-medium skin tones. I like the fact that Sunny does not go on unnaturally orange like other bronzers tend to. Score! But I find that if not careful, this bronzer can go on a bit patchy, uneven, and even a little muddy looking. I just make sure to spend the extra time to blend really, really well with a kabuki brush so it can appear more natural and even out some more. The pigmentation may seem faint to some, but believe me when I say that a little goes a long way. It is easy to over-do it. Well, at least for me it is. LOL!
Oh, before I forget, how cute is the sun imprint design on the bronzer? I am a sucker for pretty imprints. Love it!

Sunny comes housed in a plastic, snap shut, bronze compact that is rather flimsy if I do say so myself. I appreciate the fact that there is a decent sized mirror included which is always great for when one is on the go. But I am not crazy about the fact that this compact does not close all the way! There is definitely a gap in between. It also comes with a round, face sponge applicator as well.

To be totally honest, I prefer Sunny as a contour color. It works wonders for that purpose. I don't really care for it when it comes to applying it all over my cheeks, forehead, etc. When it comes to bronzers, I actually like them to contain some sort of shimmer. I like the healthy glow it imparts. Actually one of my favorite drugstore bronzers that gives me natural looking color and a healthy bronze glow to my face would be the Wet n' Wild Color Icon Bronzer in Princess. It costs $2.99 if I remember correctly-super affordable! I use it loads, and it has become on of my favorite bronzers to date.

Overall, I don't think I would repurchase Sunny. It is a nice, affordable bronzer which I am sure many are fans of. But it just did not WOW me enough to warrant another purchase from me. Again, I prefer Sunny used as a contour color and apply it on my cheekbones. I find that is the best way that I can make it work for me.

Have any of you tried Sunny? What do you all think? Let me know in the comments section, I would love to hear!

  1. I bought sunny earlier last year... and still have the same one that I never fully used. I agree it does take more effort to blend, but it's definitely workable.

Off topic... I don't know if you have tried the elf bronzer that comes in the duo (some compare to orgasm/laguna) I think that the bronzer in that duo is very muddy and hard to blend.

Now that you mentioned the fact that it doesn't close all the way, I see why mine isn't really usable. It makes the product get old fast... I think I will repurchase one though. It is a great price for a matte bronzer... like you I like mine with a little shimmer. I actually just got Wet n Wild "Princess" last week. Loving it so far.

  2. I've never tried Sunny although I've seen it a lot at discount cosmetic stores here. To be quite honest I'm trying to stay away from bronzers now, what with my Illamasqua and Nars bronzer purchases lately. But yeah, sunny does look like a good contour colour due to its matte-ness.

  3. Hey TKO,

Yes! I have tried the E.L.F. blush/bronzer duo (which I have not gotten around to reviewing-I am so lazy LOL!) and I agree that the bronzer in that duo is a bit hard to blend. But I just gotta spend the time to properly blend it and it looks OK. To be honest, that duo from E.L.F. really didn't impress me like I hoped it would. The blush and bronzer didn't live up to my expectations.
And YAY! that you are loving the Wet n' Wild Princess Bronzer! Isn't it gorgeous! Definitely one of my faves :)

    Hey Lilit,

I am really curious to try the NARS Laguna bronzer. It has been on my beauty list forever! I may give it a go this summer :)
