Essie Multi Dimension Top Coat: Shine Of The Times

If you are looking for a super cool way to amp up your nail color, then look no further because Essie's Multi Dimension Top Coat in Shine of the Times ($8.00) from the luxeffects collection, will come to the rescue! Shine of the times takes the nail flake trend up a notch by giving nails a unique holographic, colorful dimensional look, when layered over another nail color. I never really had the opportunity to experience the wonderfulness of nail flakes, until now. And boy, am I glad I did because this is really good stuff.

Check it out!

Shine of the times is a clear based nail color that contains irregularly shaped flakes that pack a whole lot of punch, with their colorful, holographic effects. Below, you will see a few swatch pictures, that showcase Shine of the times applied on a bare nail, as well as atop a few other solid nail colors. For each nail, I applied two coats of the solid base colors, and two coats of Shine of the times top coat. I was satisfied with the flake saturation on coat number two. But if you want more coverage, you can certainly keep layering coats, until you get the desired amount.

*Believe me when I say that my pictures do not do this top coat any justice. The effects need to be seen in person to be really appreciated.

*Shine of the times applied over bare nails: The flakes are peach and light yellow gold, in color. Although there is nothing wrong with using this top coat on its own over bare nails, I think this top coat looks cooler when its layered over other nail colors. Its really fun to see which effect the flakes are going to take on.

*Shine of the times applied over black nail polish: I was really astonished when I saw the effect Shine of the times produced, when layered over a solid black nail color. Love! This time, the flakes take on colors like bronze, orange, and green. Super fun, and a really great way to play up an otherwise plain, black nail color. This was probably my most favorite effect.

*Shine of the times applied over white nail polish: If you are looking for a lighter, softer effect, apply this top coat over a solid white nail color. When done so, the cool, pastel effect of the flakes come out. I absolutely love the lilac, mint green, and light pink color of the flakes. So pretty!

*Shine of the times applied over red nail polish: When this top coat is applied over a red nail color, the flakes' orange and gold tones come out. Very glam!

When it comes to the texture of this top coat, it definitely has some thickness to it. I would suggest letting the polish dry for a bit, in between coats. I made the mistake of instantly applying a second coat of Shine of the times and, I found that it dragged on my nails, producing a really uncomfortable thick layer. I love the shine that my nails obtain once this top coat dries. The flakes are flat and really smooth, too. They don't feel gritty or rough, at all. Before I forget to mention, this nail polish is free from DBP, formaldehyde, and toluene.

Overall, I think its amazing how just one top coat can produce all of these different personalities. I know this flake effect stuff is probably nothing new but, its new to me and I must say, its really refreshing. I can't wait to layer it over other nail colors! I definitely recommend giving this top coat a closer look, if you happen to spot it in stores. I purchased mine at Walgreens but I have also spotted it at Duane Reade as well.

Have any of you tried Essie's Shine of the times multi dimension top coat? What do you all think of the flake nail trend?
