L'oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner

When it comes to pencil eyeliners, I am always on the lookout for ones that will give me impressive color payoff. I am not talking about a hint of color, I am looking for the real deal. I have tried my fair share of black pencil eyeliners and, although I have found a few that I like and use frequently, I think it's safe to say that I still haven't found the 'one'. The current pencil eyeliner that I use most is Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero. I really like how creamy it is but, I have come to realize that the black pigment isn't as deep as I want it to be, and the lasting power hasn't been so great either. Quite frankly, I know that there are better black eyeliner pencils out there. Besides good color payoff, I am also looking for a pencil eyeliner that is long lasting.

In the hopes of finding a good long lasting, and well pigmented pencil eyeliner, I decided to pick up L'oreal's Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner ($9.49) while on my last trip to Duane Reade, and put it to the test. Read on to find out what I thought about it!

What intrigued me most about this pencil eyeliner was the fact that it was "kajal inspired". Kajal eyeliner is widely used in India and in other parts of the world, and it is famous for its intense color payoff.

First, the size of the pencil is adorable. I like that its short because that way, I can get much more control when I am lining my eyes. Sometimes my hands are not very steady so, I need all the control I can get. I absolutely love the fine tip. It's a great feature because not only does it give me control when it comes to how thick or thin I want the line to be, its also easy to achieve a sharp winged eye look with it as well. If you start to notice the tip is not as fine anymore, just sharpen the pencil with the included sharpener (bonus!).

In the eye picture above, I have applied this pencil eyeliner not only on my lower waterline but also on my top lash line, as well. I don't usually apply eye pencils on my top lash line, only because I have really oily lids and pencil eyeliners tend to smear and fade quickly up there. So instead, I mostly rely on cream/gel eyeliners, to line my top lash line. They last much longer on me, I think. Because of this, I usually reserve the use of pencil eyeliners for my waterline. But, I was curious to see how this pencil eyeliner would hold up, and look like on my top lash line and, I am happy to report that it did not disappoint. This eyeliner contains a smooth and creamy texture, that makes application a breeze. The color is so rich and deep, it doesn't even look like I lined my eyes with a pencil, but rather a cream/gel eyeliner. I also noticed how easy it was to get the rich color payoff. One-two swipes did the trick. All in all, the end result is just gorgeous!

As for lasting power...nothing to worry much about in that department. When it came to my waterline, the liner held on for about 4-5 hours. I started noticing the color fade away on hour four. This is really not a deal breaker for me because, realistically I don't expect a pencil eyeliner to last more than a few hours on my waterline. Now, here is the really impressive part. This eyeliner lasted all day on my top lash line. I had it on for 8 hours and it did not budge or fade. Even though I only had this eyeliner on for 8 hours, I am pretty sure that it has the potential to last a few hours more if need be. Also, I noticed absolutely no smudging anywhere on my eye area throughout the day, so that was quite impressive. Lastly, removal was not troublesome at all. Everything wiped away easily with eye makeup remover. I want to mention that I did apply an eye primer before I used this eye pencil. I have really oily lids so, an eye primer is a must for me.

As I mentioned before, this pencil eyeliner comes with a very handy, sharpener. Definitely a great bonus because, one doesn't have to go insane searching for a pencil sharpener that will contain a big enough opening, that will sharpen this specific eye pencil shape.

Overall, I think this eye pencil is a winner, and I really like it. The rich pigmentation is there, lasting power is pretty good and, you can easily find this pencil eyeliner in drugstores. I don't know if this pencil eyeliner is the 'one', or if I will ever find the perfect one for me. But, I know that I will repurchase this product and, I am definitely going to add it to my daily routine.

What do you all think of the L'oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner? Which are your favorite pencil eyeliners?

  2. It is really cute! The two eyeliners that I have tried from the Drugstore are L'oreall extra intense liquid eyeliner pencil and Milani Liquif eye pencil. Both are great, creamy and long-lasting. Oh and I love your swatch! ;)
